National Science Foundation

The Florida-Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (FGLSAMP) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Project.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.92 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.

The primary focus of FGLSAMP is to increase the number of baccalaureate degrees granted to underrepresented students in the SEM disciplines. In addition, FGLSAMP has increased the number of students enrolled in graduate education and has place more than 43% of SEM students in graduate programs. The Alliance continues to stress the value of the experiential exposure for all participants.

Program Title

Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program

Synopsis of Program

This program is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculated into programs of graduate study. LSAMP supports sustained and comprehensive approaches that facilitate achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations underrepresented in STEM fields. The program goals are accomplished through the formation of alliances. Phase I awards place emphasis on aggregate baccalaureate production. Phase II awards augment the Phase I emphasis with attention to individual student retention and progression to baccalaureate degrees. Phase III awards augment the Phase I and Phase II with attention to aggregate student progression to graduate school entry.
